IKPEAZU INAUGURATES THE SOML PforR ...Rolls out its first comprehensive phase

UMUAHIA – Abia state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu on monday inaugurated the save one million lives programme for results.

( SOMLPforR) is an  intervention programme meant to improve child and maternal health care in Nigeria. It emphasises six areas of  health care and they are free : vaccination/ immunisation of children  0-59 months , HIV screening,  insecticide treated net, Vitamin  A supplement to children, birth delivery support and tuberculosis treatment .

It is a 5 year health program inaugurated by the former President, Goodluck Jonathan in October 2012 but its implementation was started by the present administration earlier this year.

The name of the program continues to be a fitting commitment to save as many lives as possible as close 1 million women and children dies every year in Nigeria, many of them from easily preventable causes


While inaugurating the program at Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia , Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu disclosed that on taking oath of office in 2015, he promised that his government will not take the  health sector for granted in anyway, which he has continued to fulfill through the resurgence that has already taken place in our health sector. Since ever then, many health centres and hospitals have been built and well equipped with ultra modern health equipments to ensure that we give our people best of treatments in the treatment room.

He stressed that living in good health is one of the ways to give life a meaning and called on everybody to support the quest to make Abia a better place in all as he will never get tired of making the people of the state feel the impacts of his administration.

Delivering his speech the Permanent Secretary, Abia state ministry of health, Mr Nkwachukwu Agomuoh Dscribed the Saving One Million Lives as a project anchored on performance based financing which means ,the more results the state gets, the more money we earn from the program.

 "It is a clearly articulated and coherent program aimed at achieving measurable results with which a robust approach to monitoring and evaluation that relies on diverse sources of data, including household and health facility surveys, and describes the way of using the data to increase accountability in the health sector" he said


According to the permanent Secretary , the Under 5 mortality rate in Abia state is 83 per 1000 live births, an improvement from 131 per 1000 live birth by 2013. This is an evidence that the state is on the right track in achieving this with SOML program and other laudable health interventions ongoing in the state.

He said, ". We are set to run at a jet speed. We have successfully conducted a baseline quantitative integrated supportive supervision of the public primary health facilities, results are presently being analyzed, our work plan has been approved and the technical working group has met severally."

Mr Agomuoh while thanking the Governor for his unalloyed support to the successful implementation of the program and other health programs said the ministry remains resolute in delivering quality, accessible and affordable healthcare services to the people of Abia state.

The Governor of Abia state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Chairman house committee on health, Hon. Blessing Nwagba, Special adviser and special assistant to the Governor on health, Permanent Secretary, Abia state ministry of health, Mr Nkwachukwu Agomuoh , Traditional Rulers, ALGON state chairman represented by the LGA chairman of Osisioma LG, Mr Ihenyinna Mgbeahuru, Health secretaries from the 17 LGAs , WHO representative, etc were all present during the ceremony .
