The Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu have been conferred with the honour of Professional Fellow of Nigeria Environmental Society (FNES).The event which took place on Friday the 4th of November, 2016 at the society's 36th National Annual General Conference in Abuja had others conferred with the prestigious awards of the society to include the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mohammdu Buhari, Minister of Environment, Amina J. Mohamed, House Committee Chairman on Environment and Engr. Enyinnaya Nwafor as Honourary Fellow of the society among others.
Governor Ikpeazu, while making his acceptance speech on behalf of the Awardees, thanked the society for the honour done to them and equally emphasized on the need for both public and private sectors participation in developing and building sustainable green economy across all length and breadth of the nation.
The Governor used the occasion to discuss the need for government to invest in renewable energy, especially on use of solar panels to provide electricity that will power most of the country's demos tic activities. He noted that Nigeria is blessed with steady potential 12hour solar energy that can address the Nigeria's energy needs and emphasized the need for educating the Nigerian populace on waste management, proper disposal and handling of the waste we generate.
He maintained that such behavioural change initiative should start from our primary and secondary schools by instituting such as part of students curriculum, which will inculcate appropriate waste management knowledge and behaviours in our society. In a similar development, the Abia state chapter of Nigeria Environmental Society (NES) was inaugurated by the council and national executive of NES.
The Abia State branch is now fully operational and expected to offer the environmental services to the state The Abia State commissioner of environment, Barr. Gabriel Igboko, senior special assistant to the governor on environment Mr. Uchenna Onyeizu who is also a professional member of Nigeria Environmental Society were equally present at the event. Recall that prior to his ascension into power as the Abia State governor, Dr. Ikpeazu was the pilot deputy manager of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) which saw Aba became one of the neatest cities within the time under review.
