ART AND CULTURE: At The Core Of War
By Kristin Palpini
At the core of war
KA Kaollwitz (1867-1945) is perhaps Germany’s most
recognized female artist of the 20th century. Growing
up in Germany during the WWII era, Kaollwitz lost a
son and grandson to war and decided to use her art to
promote an anti-war message. Her work focuses on
mothers and children. With harsh lines and thick color,
Kaollwitz demonstrates the fragility and strength of
family.
Mothers’ Arms: From KA Kollwitz’s Women and War
series. Through May 28. Smith College Museum of Art,
20 Elm St., Northampton, (413) 585-2760.
