Abia Revenue Committee Inauguration
Abia State Internally Generated Revenue Council Committee has been inaugurated with a charge to report to government any anomaly noticed in the collection of revenues to the Revenue Council and the Board of Internal Revenue for immediate action.
Giving the charge while inaugurating the eight man monitoring unit at government house Umuahia, the Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu named their terms of reference to include assisting the internally generated revenue council of the State and Board of internal revenue, in ensuring that they check all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to ascertain the level of compliance with the IGR policies of the State.
Dr. Ikpeazu represented by his Deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu further stated that the monitoring unit is to determine if the revenue windows being enforced by the various MDAs are also provided for in the laws of Abia State and inform the council and BIR of the anomalies if any.
The Governor also directed them to embark on intelligence gathering to identify if there are illegal revenue collectors and the revenues they are collecting in addition to paying visits to tax payers to ascertain their level of compliance and to also ensure that they are paid to the appropriate IGR accounts. He expressed optimism that the Committee will achieve the desired result of making government realize its goal of improving the internally generated revenue of the State as proscribed by law and in accordance with the IGR council directives which is the main essence of setting up the Committee.
Responding on behalf of other members, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Revenue mobilization Mr. Ndubuisi Agoh and the chief consultant of the monitoring unit, Mr. Gideon Solomon assured that they will deliver on their mandate and solicits total support from government to enable them make the desired impact while thanking government for giving them the opportunity to serve.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Eme Okoro, the Chairman BIR, Elder Udochukwu Ogbonna and other top government officials were present during the inauguration.
