National assembly moves to prevent repayment of allowances of sacked lawmakers
The House of Representatives has passed an amendment of the electoral act which seeks to prevent the repayment of allowances of sacked lawmakers.
The bill was passed on Tuesday after consideration of the report by committee on Electoral and Political Matters chaired by Aisha Dukku (APC, Gombe).
It would be recalled that Mr. Herman Hembe was sacked
on June 23 by the Supreme Court and was ordered to return all the salaries and allowances he earned since June, 2015.
During the consideration of the report, Edward Pwajok (APC, Plateau) harped on the need to prevent the instances of repayment of allowances after a court has sacked a lawmaker.
“If the court determines that a candidate was not validly
nominated, the elected candidate shall not withstanding the contrary decision of the court remain in office within the period for which an appeal may be filled”.
After the passage of the bill, the House adjourned plenary till 19th of December 2017.
